LOMBOK, NTB (BPN) – The evacuation of tourists at Gili Terawangan, Gili Air and Meno who were affected by the 7-magnitude earthquake was still carried out until Monday, August 6, evening. There is no official data on the number of tourists, both foreign and domestic in the three islands in Lombok, the BNPB (National Disaster Mitigation Agency announced in a press release on Monday.

“Initial estimates indicate around 1,000 people. It turns out there are more. The joint SAR team led by Basarnas has managed to evacuate 2,700 foreign and domestic tourists from the three islands on Monday at 3.00 p.m.,” said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, Head of the BNPB Information and Public Relations Center.

According to Sutopo, tourists were evacuated to Bangsal harbor, North Lombok Regency, using nine ships. While thousands of the rest tourists and hotel employees are still in the process of evacuation out of the islands.

“The evacuation is their (tourist) initiative. They got shocked by the quake which was followed by a tsunami early warning. They are also worried about a bigger aftershock followed by tsunami. This was a hoax that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 will be followed by a tsunami in Lombok,” Sutopo said.

The hoax, he continued, spreading widely in Lombok, making citizens and tourists afraid. This information is incorrect and misleading.

“An earthquake cannot be predicted with certainty, how much magnitude, where and when for sure. Aftershocks from the 7-magnitude earthquake will certainly occur but with a smaller intensity. Until Monday at 5.00 P.M, aftershocks had occurred 176 times with small intensity,” he concluded.
