DENPASAR, Bali (BPN) – The Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, with Senior Vice President General Counsel, Marie Champey, signed an agreement to the use of Balinese Endek hand-woven fabrics in Dior’s products.
Governor Koster and Marie Champey signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the Statement of Intent between the Bali Provincial Government and Christian Dior Couture SA, which was held virtual on Friday, January 8, 2021.
The cooperation also contained an agreement to empower micro, small and medium enterprises that produced Endek fabrics in Bali, and in the other fields which are of common interest for both parties.
Prior to this signing, on September 25, 2020, Christian Dior delivered a letter to the Indonesian Ambassador in Paris, who appealed to use Balinese Endek for the design of the Spring/Summer 2021 collection. The collection was launched at Paris Fashion Week on September 29, 2020.
The Bali Provincial Government responded to the letter to the Indonesian Ambassador and approved the appeal proposed by Christian Dior by fulfilling some requirements.
First, the Balinese Endek fabrics used by Dior must be produced by weavers in Bali by hand made using a traditional tool called Cagcag or non-machine weaving tools.
Second, the Endek motif is in the process of obtaining Geographical Indication of Intellectual Property Rights for Balinese People.
Third, it is not allowed to use Balinese Endek fabrics which are produced outside Bali Province using modern weaving machines or other printing tools.
“Considering the limited production capacity of Endek weavers, and so that weavers in Bali can meet the needs of Christian Dior, the order to be done earlier,” the governor said while adding his plan to provide guidance and supervision in the production process.
Koster also stated the Bali Government must obtain accurate, transparent, and accountable information in the fulfillment of Endek fabrics.
While the size of the Endek fabrics produced by weavers in Bali is a maximum of 105 cm, and the colors and motifs produced shall not a hundred percent the same.
Koster hoped Christian Dior and other parties understand and appreciate both the advantages and weaknesses in the production of Balinese Endek fabrics.
