Arriving from the Netherlands with his senior team of chefs, maître and sommelier, the dinner will feature a tasting menu that provides a glimpse into the culinary direction of Syrco BASÈ, which is set to redefine Bali and the region’s culinary scene.

Following the event, the team will embark on a series of pop-up kitchen takeovers in Singapore, Bangkok, and Jakarta over the coming months before permanently establishing themselves in Bali for the opening of Syrco BASÈ.

At thirty-eight years old, Syrco Bakker is already an established global culinary force who needs no introduction. He has earned Two Michelin Stars and an 18/20 Gault Millau rating as Executive Chef at the renowned Pure C in Cadzand, Netherlands.

Michelin-Starred Chef Syrco Bakker

He ranked number 31 in the World’s Best Chefs Awards 2018 and was named the 2022 Chef of the Year in the Netherlands. Constantly delivering exceptional results, Syrco is now undertaking an epic personal and professional journey with his return to his family’s roots in Indonesia.

It’s a family affair for Syrco, who grew up in the Netherlands. With his grandfather from Java and grandmother from Sumatra, Syrco BASÈ represents both a reconnection and a homecoming for him, fusing his European and Indonesian roots.

“My roots in the fertile soil of Bali, where together we grow and flourish,” Syrco Bakker said.

Syrco’s Indonesian-Dutch cultural heritage and upbringing in the melting pot of Europe have defined his signature culinary style, which involves sourcing the best local ingredients and incorporating techniques and flavours that embrace both the oriental and occidental palate, evoking childhood memories while authentically championing ingredients, culture, and heritage.

Syrco BASÈ will open its doors in Q4 this year in Ubud, Bali’s culinary capital. Located a short drive from the cultural town centre, the culinary hub is surrounded by lush tropical jungle, rice paddies, and temples that make the area iconic.

Transforming the modern dining experience, Chef Syrco and his team have developed a multi-experiential destination that combines gastronomy, mixology, and, most importantly, innovation and sustainability. This unique approach takes shape through one location with three immersive dining experiences and supporting workshops, agriculture, and retail.

The term BASÈ, a Balinese word rooted in the ancient Sanskrit of the Majapahit, which influenced the entire Indonesian archipelago thousands of years ago, carries two meanings: “taste” or “inception,” and “tongue” or “language.”

Simply put, it is through the tongue that we both experience and describe the flavours, textures, and nuances of food. The food itself represents far more than mere sustenance; it embodies culture, creativity, and much more.

For Syrco and the team, this BASÈ culture manifests in the core values of the project, embracing and working with the community, empowering and showcasing local ingredients, producers, and techniques, while through a mindful approach to business, embracing stewardship and inclusivity.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my culinary vision with the world from Bali, welcoming guests to experience the unique tastes, ambiance, place, and people while sharing in our vision at Syrco BASÈ shall be profound,” Syrco Bakker explained.

An iconic design that seamlessly connects with the culinary concept, Syrco BASÈ will feature 4 distinctive areas; a Restaurant with a Bar Lounge, an intimate Chef’s Table, and a  bite Bar, serving an unscripted fine dining menu complete with an extensive cocktail and mocktails menus and wine cellar showcasing some of the world’s top wines and natural wines.

Furthermore, the onsite shop will feature collaborations with local artisans, producers, brewers, fishermen, and farmers.

Syrco BASÈ is far more than a restaurant; it is an amalgamation of global influences and innovation in ingredients, cooking, and dining.

Taking inspiration from the Balinese concept of the moving universe, it is a platform that continually evolves and adapts to seasonal, environmental, and intellectual transformations around it.

As the stoves are fired up and the team makes the final preparations for opening, be prepared to be amazed.
