CANGGU, Bali (BPN) – Balinese’s day of silence or Nyepi is a Hindu’s holy day that is celebrated every year. Nyepi is held every Isakawarsa according to the Balinese calendar (in March or April).
This day is dedicated to self-reflection and meditation. All businesses, restaurants, and stores are closed for 24 hours, including the Ngurah Rai International Airport which will be closed along with all main roads in Bali.
The Balinese people will participate in self-purification and ceremonial rites, which are not lighting the fire, not working, not traveling, and refraining from having fun. All will start from 6 AM until 6 AM the next day.
The day before Nyepi is called pangerupukan, there will be many Ogoh-ogoh (giant puppets) around the street in Bali. Ogoh-ogoh symbolizes the bad elements that must be destroyed and bring back the good elements to the environment.
The current situation does not reduce the intention of the society to feel the wisdom of the Silent day.
