Kemenparekraf Improves Room Attendant’s Competency to Prepare New Normal in Tourism

JAKARTA (BPN) – Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) assisted tourism and creative economy employees to increase their competencies (upskilling and reskilling) in anticipation of returning to their jobs field when the COVID-19 pandemic ends.

The ministry conducted online training for the room attendant which is officially opened on Tuesday, May 26, attended by 75 participants. The training will be divided into eight meetings that will take place for the next few weeks.

The Ministry’s Acting Deputy of Resources and Institutions Frans Teguh, said that the government continues to encourage the employees to maintain their ability and skill so that they will not feel awkward when re-entering their workforce in the new normal era.

“This training also aims to prepare them to provide kind and sincere services to the millions of tourists who will come to visit after this difficult time ends,” Frans Teguh said.

A room attendant with good competence and ability is considered to be very influential in the tourism industry, in which the room attendant who is under the housekeeping department is an important part of the hotel industry, one of the most important elements in tourism.

The duties of the room attendant include maintaining the cleanliness of hotel areas such as rooms and public areas, handling lost and found, and handling laundry and dry cleaning.

“As the department that employs the most staff in the hotel, the room attendant plays an important role in guest satisfaction, because it directly handles the hotel rooms. Moreover, in the upcoming new normal era which prioritizes the elements of cleanliness, health, and safety. Room attendants must be able to provide guarantee not only in cleanliness but also in health as well as being free of all viruses,” he said.

Meanwhile, the ministry’s Director of Tourism Human Resource Development Wisnu Bawa Tarunajaya who is represented by the deputy, Surana, said that the online training for the room attendants is attended by 75 participants from various regions in the country.

They are the room attendants from hotels in Jabodetabek, Bali, Yogyakarta, Makassar, Palembang, and Lampung.

They received training directly from instructors who are experts in their fields. Among them are material on implementing work safety and security procedures, preparing rooms for guests, having short telephone conversations, promoting products and services to customers, handling customer complaints, and others.

“Through this training, it is expected to be able to improve knowledge, skills, and working behavior in implementing the duties and responsibilities of a room attendant,” Surana said.
