Plataran Menjangan to Assist and Enhance Local Fishermen in Bali’s Northernmost Village
SINGARAJA, Bali (BPN) – Menjangan Island in the West Bali National Park area is the northernmost point of the western island of Bali and is known as a special interest diving destination.
Here dive tourists can enjoy the beauty of wall diving. Divers can follow a stretch of underwater cliffs in calm waters with various coral reef formations at depths of 10 to 60 meters.
The underwater formations form caves of various sizes which are the habitat of large groupers, moray eels, as well as small snapper and batfish.
KUB Banyumandi is a local UMKM (SME) business organization realized by Plataran Menjangan Resort & Spa that is comprised of Banyuwedang fishermen in Pejarakan Village who work to catch, process, and sell fish in the designated area provided.
The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is supporting and expanding the capacity of the Banyumandi Joint Business Group Marine Ecotourism in collaboration with Plataran Menjangan, West Bali National Park, and the Tourism Office of the Buleleng Regency.
This government assistance activity is bottom-up and based on the proposer’s needs, after which the proposal is examined and helped by a technical team and a team of specialists based on the marine ecotourism special interest tourist topic.
The proposal was realized in the form of diving and snorkeling equipment facilitation, as well as a work-intensive program in the form of a special interest tourism seminar on sustainable diving-snorkeling, and the safety guidance of tourist boats in the Menjangan area of West Bali.
This activity is also a follow-up to the “Towards Climate Positive Tourism through Decarbonization and Ecotourism” program corridor which was launched in The Octagon Ocean Club on 6-7 July 2022.
The development of ecotourism in Indonesia is being integrated with the carbon offset program which is one of Indonesia’s efforts to contribute to balancing carbon emissions generated from tourism activities.
In addition, this is also part of the implementation of the Government of Indonesia in the 5 pillars of The Tourism Working Group (TWG), namely: Climate Action, Biodiversity Conservation, and Circular Economy.
Located in a 382-hectare forest that is home to 175 species of flora and 167 species of fauna, Plataran Menjangan is an icon and pioneer of ecotourism that provides upscale resort facilities and luxurious experiences.
The resort features 19 villas, an ocean club, spa center, exclusive restaurant, and a fleet of three private phinisi sailing ships and yachts that explore the exotic surroundings of Menjangan Island, framed by four surrounding mountains.
The Plataran Menjangan masterplan was designed by Hitesh Mehta of HM Design, who is considered one of the world’s leading authorities, practitioners, and researchers in the physical planning of sustainable tourism/ecotourism and the architectural aspects of landscape ecolodges.
In 2006, National Geographic named Hitesh Mehta one of the world’s Five Pioneers of Sustainable Tourism.
