International Kite-Fliers to Join Bali International Kite Festival 2023 in Sanur, July 14-16

DENPASAR, Bali (BPN) – Hundreds of local, national, and international kite-fliers are set to take part in one of the biggest kite festivals in Bali namely the Bali Kite Festival and Bali International Kite Festival which will take place on July 14-16, 2023, in Padanggalak, Sanur.

Ida Bagus Sedhawa, Head of the Indonesian Kites Association (Pelangi) of Bali, said that the 45th edition of the Bali Kite Festival will be attended by hundreds of participants, while the Bali International Kite Festival, which was held since 1992, will be attended by around 48 kite-fliers.

“There are 17 foreign participants from eight countries and 31 participants from other regions in Indonesia. Currently, 783 participants from Bali also have registered. This number is still increasing since registration is still ongoing,” he said at a press conference on Monday (7/10/2023) in Renon, Denpasar.

The participants from abroad who took part are from Sweden, Japan, the Philippines, Poland, Australia, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Akio Takeda, who will take part in the festival representing the Japan Kite Association, said that Bali’s kite tradition is one of the best in the world. He said that the wind in Bali is stable enough to allow the kite to fly perfectly.

In addition, Akio also admires and praises the solidity and the mutual cooperation of kite-fliers in Bali.

“I am amazed to see kites in Bali, they work together to fly kites, here the kite culture is strongly preserved, it’s amazing,” said Akio.

The Bali Kite Festival to showcases competition for traditional flown by teenagers namely the Bebean measuring 2 – 3.5 meters, Pecukan (2 – 3.5 meters), Janggan (2 – 3.5 meters), and Janggan Buntut (2 – 3.5 meters ).

While competition at the Bali International Kite Festival is for adults namely Bebean (4-5 meters), Pecukan (4-5 meters), Janggan Buntut (4-5 meters), Janggan (4-Open), Big Size Bebean (6 – Open), Janggan Buntut Big Size (6 – Open), and will showcase creation-kite types (Flat and 3 Dimensions).

Secretary of Pelangi Bali IB Alit Suryana added that the participation of international kite-fliers is an opportunity for locals to learn kinds of modern techniques including how to apply technology to kites.

Meanwhile Made Arya, the Communication Manager of the State-owned Electricity Company (PLN) in Bali appreciated the kite can be flown in a safe place, both for kite-fliers and the electricity cable network.

“PLN supports this event because we want to educate kite-flier in Bali on how to play kites safely, safe from the PLN electricity network, and safe not only for the fliers but also the community,” said Arya.

Arya emphasized that his party really appreciates this collaboration so that the kites culture remains sustainable while taking care of the safety of the community and public facilities at once.
