KLUNGKUNG, Bali (BPN) – The Regent of Klungkung I Nyoman Suwirta stated that the main key to overcoming the waste problem is sorting household waste by the people themselves. This policy continues to be socialized in Klungkung Regency so that the handling becomes easier at the processing site.
This was stated by Nyoman Suwirta when attending the inauguration of the executive board of the waste-care journalist network (J2PS), which was also attended by the Deputy Governor of Bali Cok Ace, at the TOSS Center, Kusamba, Klungkung, on Saturday (10/29/2022).
“The key is sorting the waste from the household. If it is successful, then 50 percent of the waste processing is successful. This is the importance of handling waste from the upstream,” he said.
Suwirta also explained the establishment of the local’s waste processing (TOSS) Center, a waste processing site in Klungkung with a handling system from upstream to downstream, and has produced high economic value.
Suwirta said that since the beginning of his tenure as regent, he was worried about the increasing garbage at the regency’s landfill, moreover that our civilization produces an extraordinary amount of waste.
“We were struggling with the waste problem. Until we finally conducted a trial of converting waste into electricity, the trial was successful and the TOSS CENTER was established,” he explained.
At first, he continued, the waste processing at the TOSS Center was for people’s electricity. However, in its development, it also processes waste into compost to support local farmers.
Furthermore, Suwirta explained that the TOSS Center applies a waste management method that prioritizes people’s behavior to sort waste from their homes.
According to him, regulation is important but not everything, what is important is the execution and law enforcement.
He gave an example, in Klungkung, the most effective application of the TOSS Center method is through social media.
“When there is the waste is badly handled (in the community), we give the violator a choice; sorting the waste properly or apologizing live on social media,” he said.
This method is quite successful, it is proven that currently, most people are able to sort waste up to 50 percent.
“We are targeting 100 percent of the village TOSS. Our job is to educate the public to be obedient in sorting waste from their homes,” said Suwirta.
The TOSS Center, which stands on 1.9 hectares of land, has become increasingly popular and has become a model for other regions, and was also included in the TOP 40 national public service innovations in 2018.
Meanwhile, Deputy Governor Cok Ace who was present at the event also invited the community to fight the waste problem because this is not only a tourism problem but a problem for all communities.
“The Bali Provincial Government invites all people to care and participate in the fight while reducing waste starting from households,” said Cok Ace.
The chairman of J2PS Bali Agustinus Apollonaris KD said that J2PS is the first forum for journalists in Bali, or even in Indonesia, that show concern regarding the waste problems.
“Freedom from trash doesn’t mean we are free from the trash. As long as there is civilization, trash will always exist. But the most important thing is how we wisely manage the waste so that nature is not polluted and does not spread bad smells everywhere,” he explained.
