SOBU PANAH: Innovative Strategy by Bangli Farmers to Increase Agricultural Yields

BANGLI, Bali (BPN) – Farmers in Bunutin Village, Bangli District, now have new hope for improving their agricultural yields thanks to an extension program entitled “SOBU PANAH” (Solutions for Rice and Peanut Cultivation) implemented by a team of lecturers and students from the Agribusiness Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture and Business, Mahasaraswati University Denpasar (Unmas Denpasar).

This activity is part of the 2025 Flagship Community Service Program (PkM) funded by the university and involving foreign partners from BASC-Philippines.

The SOBU PANAH program introduces a crop rotation system between rice and peanuts as a smart solution for small plots of land and limited access to fertilizers.

This innovation not only increases land productivity but also improves soil fertility naturally through nitrogen fixation by peanuts.

According to the Head of the Implementation Team, Ir. Cening Kardi, M.M.A., with Dr. Ni Putu Sukanteri, S.P., M.Agb this approach is a form of sustainable agriculture that reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers and maintains the balance of the agroecosystem.

“This crop rotation can increase rice yields by up to 41% and significantly improve soil structure,” he said.

SOBU PANAH is designed to address various challenges faced by rural farmers, such as high fertilizer prices, declining soil fertility, and the risk of pests in monoculture cultivation.

The system integrates two strategic commodities—rice and peanuts—with a planting calendar tailored to the local season and weather patterns.

A total of 85% of participants expressed strong interest in implementing SOBU PANAH on their land.

They also showed high interest in attending further training and replacing their conventional planting systems.
