GIANYAR, Bali (BPN) – In celebration of the cultural traditions leading up to the Balinese Day of Silence, Kawi Resort presents the creation and display of the Ogoh-Ogoh (giant effigy), honoring one of Bali’s most legendary figures, Kebo Iwa.
The Ogoh-Ogoh tradition is an important part of Balinese culture and is typically performed during Pengerupukan, the evening before Nyepi.
According to Dewa Diego Director of Kawi Resort, this initiative reflects the resort’s dedication to offering guests an authentic cultural experience while preserving Bali’s rich traditions.
“Through the Kebo Iwa Ogoh-Ogoh, we hope to introduce our guests to one of Bali’s most meaningful cultural traditions while celebrating the creativity of local artisans and the spirit of the community,” said Dewa Diego.
Guests staying at the resort will have the opportunity to witness the creative process behind the Ogoh-Ogoh, interact with the artisans involved, and experience the vibrant cultural atmosphere leading up to the Pengerupukan celebration.
Balinese giant effigies during Nyepi celebration, symbolize negative energies and are paraded through communities as a ritual of purification before the island enters a day of silence, reflection, and renewal according to the Balinese Saka calendar.
This year, the Ogoh-Ogoh at Kawi Resort is inspired by the powerful figure of Kebo Iwa, a legendary giant in Balinese folklore known for his immense strength and historical significance in Bali’s ancient stories.
The effigy has been crafted in collaboration with Maestro Ogoh – Ogoh and members of the surrounding community, highlighting the resort’s commitment to supporting local culture and artistic expression.
