DENPASAR, Bali (BPN) – Adya in collaboration with the Elementary School (SDN) 17 Kesiman, Denpasar, held a Creative Book of Empowered Children program, a training program for developing literacy skills for students. This program facilitates children gaining literacy rights so that they can contribute to creating impactful artwork.
This program, which facilitates children to study deeply according to their potential and interests, consists of 18 cycles over 6 years.
Each cycle consists of three main program series, namely financial literacy which includes theoretical learning and practice of saving one thousand rupiah per day, training according to interests, and publication of student artwork.
Every year, students take part in three training cycles. The output of each training becomes an artwork that can be expanded and become a learning medium for younger children.
Every first cycle of the training each year begins with an assessment or mapping of students’ condition. In other words, students know their abilities as their assets.
This knowledge is also part of the school’s information regarding the diversity of student abilities. This can be part of the school’s asset mapping. To start this program, an experimental program or trial program was implemented.
The Creative Book of Empowered Children experimental program started in February 2024. The process of this activity includes socializing the program with teachers, students, and parents by the school principal.
Then teachers teach students about financial literacy before Adya assesses students. Following this step, Adya comes to school to train students to develop their interests such as writing, illustration, or public speaking.
At the end of the process, the students get their inspired Adya’s book, a contextual picture book created by empowered children.
This celebration day was held to celebrate National Education Day, May 2, 2024. The series of celebrations was implemented by SDN 17 Kesiman on April 27, 2024, and May 4, 2024.
Principal of 17 Kesiman Elementary School, Ni Made Wisudarini Pratiwi, stated that this program was a collaborative movement between the school and the private sector.
This is an ongoing collaboration with the spirit of Merdeka Belajar (independent learning). Starting by improving students’ financial skills, describing interests, and facilitating students to learn through their respective interests. In this way, each student creates artwork according to their potential.
Of course, the work produced is diverse and enriches the learning media of Indonesian education.
While designing this program, Zeni, Adya’s founder, hoped that education could become a sustainable space for collaboration to children empowerment.
It requires mutually supportive cooperation from the school community members (students, teachers, parents, and stakeholders).
At the peak of the event, students practice developing their interests. They are free to choose to hone their writing skills so they can create written works.
Those who like drawing can also hone their skills in illustrating characters and stories. Lastly, students who like to talk and want to appear in public can hone their public speaking skills.
From this experimental program, students in writing classes create poetry or short stories. Students from the illustration class created works in the form of unique characters from the environment around them, while students from the public speaking class created works in the form of read-aloud videos and presentations on important issues that were of interest to students.
Their works were published as an activity book. This activity book can be used by students at the kindergarten level to learn while playing, such as coloring, recognizing letters and simple stories as well as listening to interesting stories or issues.
This program is a collaborative space for school principals, teachers, school officials, students, parents, and Adya to support students in creating artwork. This utilized work allows students to contribute to creating an impact as a literacy process.
